You can now join an Xbox party chat using an Android device.

First up you'll need the Xbox Beta app, which Microsoft uses to test 'new capabilities'.

On your computer, the running IP Helper service allows the Xbox app to communicate over the network. If this service is not set properly, the Xbox app may not work well, leading to “your network settings are blocking party chat”. Step 1: Open the Run box by pressing Win + R, input services.msc and click OK. Use the Xbox app on the pc for the party chat then just turn on desktop audio. Go to your sound settings while in a Xbox party and set the party chat to go through. If you want to join an Xbox party and chat with everyone in that chat, open the social widget from the Xbox Game Bar, right-click a friend that's in the party you want to join, and select Join Party. The Xbox app keeps you connected to your gaming community on your phone or tablet. Easily share game clips & screenshots, chat, view achievements and get notifications. Plus, play games from your console. With the Xbox app, set up or join an Xbox party. Get together and chat with friends as you move. The new Xbox One party chat overlay provides visual feedback for who's speaking in a chat, and it is now available in the Xbox Insider's Alpha ring. Here's how to set up and use the new feature.

There's no word on when this will roll out to the standard Xbox smartphone app, which is also available for iPhone.

The idea behind it makes perfect sense, though. There are plenty of Microsoft games for smartphones - not least Minecraft, which offers cross-platform play between Android, iPhone, Windows and Xbox One. Why shouldn't people playing together from a mobile device be able to party chat at the same time?

And, even if you're playing on an Xbox, it might be useful to chat via your phone using a headset which might otherwise not work with your console.

Let's hope it works a little better than Nintendo's Switch smartphone app did when it arrived.
